Three Safe Practices for the Workplace
For facility leaders, maintaining a secure environment is a top priority. Safety is built through consistent, daily choices that protect residents and staff.
Implementing these three fundamental safety practices can significantly reduce workplace injuries and enhance the overall quality of care within your facility. contributes to a safer environment for everyone.
Proper Use of Wet Floor Signs
Slip-and-fall prevention depends on the disciplined use of wet floor signs. Signs should be placed before any cleaning activity begins. In resident rooms, place a sign at the doorway. In larger areas such as hallways and common spaces, place signs at both ends and throughout the space as needed. Everyone must understand that a spill should never be left unattended without a visible warning. If a sign is not immediately available, a team member should remain at the site to alert others until additional assistance arrives.

Scan a Room Before Entering
A proactive “Top-to-Bottom” scan is a simple yet effective method for identifying risks before they lead to incidents. Before entering any area, staff should scan overhead for leaks, low-hanging objects, or other obstructions. Next, scan eye level for carts, walkers, or other items that could block your path. Finally, check the floor for potential hazards such as water, debris, dropped items, or uneven surfaces. This habit ensures that potential hazards are addressed immediately, fostering a culture of awareness.

Identify Hazards
As you move through your work area, look for items that seem out of place, such as a stray object on the floor, a cleaning bucket without a caution sign, or an obstructed walkway. Trust your observations and report or correct hazards whenever possible. Our eyes are among our most valuable safety tools, and taking a moment to identify risks can help protect both employees and residents from preventable accidents.

Safety is a daily commitment. By using proper safety tools, we can protect ourselves, our coworkers, and the residents we serve. Remember: if you see a hazard, take action. Safe habits today help prevent injuries tomorrow.
