Elevating Everyday Dining
Creating memorable dining experiences for residents goes far beyond decorative placemats or special birthday meals. It challenges dining teams to think creatively and transform everyday meals into meaningful moments.
One way Healthcare Services Group (HCSG) brings this vision to life is through cooking demonstrations. More than simply serving a meal, these events turn dining into an interactive experience, filled with connection, education, and engagement that enhance residents’ daily routines.
Cooking demonstrations sparked from a collaboration between HCSG’s executive chefs and the operations team, all with a shared goal of elevating dining experiences. Now held monthly across various facilities, cooking demonstrations have become a highlight for residents and staff.
During the event, one chef leads a live cooking demonstration, walking residents through step-by-step instructions on how to make the meal, while dining team members serve the dish. This allows residents to watch the process unfold in real time while enjoying a freshly prepared meal. Past themes have included Asian Fusion, Bread Making, Omelette Stations, and more.
Recently, the HCSG dining team at the Fountains at Atco, located in Atco, New Jersey, organized an Italian-themed cooking experience. This event was led by District Manager in Training Chad Satanoff, District Manager Kayla Skotnicki, and Director of Operations Matt Marchetti. In preparation for nearly 60 attendees, the team spent days leading up to the event rolling pasta dough, assembling tiramisu, baking focaccia bread, and preparing ravioli, all while continuing their regular mealtime service.
Residents gathered in the dining hall as Chad demonstrated the art of making fresh pasta from scratch. He walked residents through each step of the pasta-making process, explaining the purpose behind every technique, answering questions, and sharing tips for perfecting homemade pasta. With a background in fine dining, Chad brings both expertise and passion to each demonstration. “Being able to use my experience and share it with the residents has been one of the highlights of my job,” he shared.
Since The Fountains at Atco is a Continuing Care Retirement Community, residents have the opportunity to take what they learned and recreate the experience in their own kitchens. The event was a success, leaving cleared plates and smiling faces. At its core, cooking demonstrations are about more than delicious food. It’s about creating moments that bring residents together, spark conversation, and turn everyday dining into something truly memorable.
